Don’t Miss These Upcoming Professional Development Opportunities From Puget Sound ESD
June 29 & 30, 2009; 9:30-7:00
Puget Sound ESD and NCCE have partnered again to offer the Digital Photography Bootcamp at the Pack Forest Conference Center, located near Mt. Rainier. This beautiful setting will be used for a fun and informative program that gives you a chance to learn how to use your digital camera to its potential in education (and for your personal use too). At this beginning level bootcamp, sessions will include hands-on computer lab time and extensive practice taking photographs at Pack Forest and in Mt. Rainier National Park. Topics covered: get to know your camera’s settings and special functions; explore concepts unique to digital photography including resolution and file size; discover the rules of photo composition; download, enhance, retouch, crop, and print your images; and most of all, have fun! We hope you can join us for three days and two nights of digital photography exploration this summer!
We know that our middle and high school students are already playing plenty of online games.* But, do internet-based games always mean wasted time and mushy brains? In this class, we will take a look at online games and virtual worlds within the context of global/international education. Participants will try out some fun, educational, free, online games designed to teach about global topics from the poverty cycle to preventing malaria to what its like to be a refugee. Next we’ll jump into the 3-D virtual world of Second Life to see why and how educators around the world are using virtual worlds to bring students together in international learning communities.

Thinkfinity makes it easy for educators to enhance their classroom instruction with lesson plans, interactive activities and other online resources. More than 55,000 standards-based K-12 lesson plans, student materials, interactive tools and reference materials have been reviewed by the nation’s leading educational organizations to ensure that content is accurate, up-to-date, unbiased and appropriate for students. Session topics will include an exploration of the Thinkfinity site, navigation to resources from each of the eight content sites, and integration of Thinkfinity resources within the context of a lesson to support student learning.
This summer institute is designed specifically for elementary teachers (K-5) with a non-science background. The focus of this years institute will be to increase teacher understanding of energy and matter concepts as well as to extend teacher understanding of inquiry, systems, and the nature of science. Participants will be immersed in a variety of learning and assessment experiences where preconceptions are uncovered, ideas are discussed using evidence, and scientific concepts are made relevant. While the focus of this institute is on content, the instruction delivered will model effective and engaging strategies in science teaching, learning, and assessment. Participants will reflect on their own learning of science, how children learn science, and the implications for their own teaching. 30 clock hours available.
